NO ROOM IN OLD CEMETERY
Brampton residents who do not own a burial plot cannot be buried in the city cemetery if they should die before Sept 1.
In a report to the parks and recreation committee Monday, Donald Gordon, commissioner of parks and recreation informed committee members that there are no adult plots available in the cemetery.
“Any resident who dies between now and September, when the new Meadowvale Cemetery opens, would have to be buried elsewhere if they didn’t own a plot,” said Gordon. “Several burials have taken place at Glendale Memorial Gardens on highway 27 and Albion”. As of June 19th, the report said, the only available plots for sale in the Brampton Cemetery were 97 cremation and 20 children or infant plots.
“We’ve had several people who wanted the deceased family member buried in Brampton, but couldn’t,” said a spokesman at the Leo Archdekin Funeral Home. “Right now we are taking people to Boston Mills Cemetery in Caledon, Dixon Union on Kennedy Road, north of 17 Side- road and Glendale Memorial.”
The situation should be alleviated by September with the Meadowvale Cemetery opening on the Second Line West, south of Steeles Avenue, according to Gordon. The Toronto Trust Cemeteries purchased approximately 200 acres which should accommodate the city for 75 years, he said.
“Most of us don’t think of buying a plot until a death in the family occurs,” said Gordon. “This is a very timely problem.”
