History:
According to Trudy Mann, St. John’s Anglican cemetery was not formally begun until about 1870. Prior to that time the pioneer cemetery behind Dixie Union Chapel would have been used by all Protestants. There was probably no section of Dixie Union Cemetery specifically set aside for Anglicans.
Dixie Union Cemetery was separated in 1869 with the part north of an old laneway sold to the Presbyterians, and the part east of another laneway became St. John’s. St. John’s Cemetery acquired more land to the east and today this cemetery occupies ten acres at the north east corner of Cawthra Road and Dundas Street to the rear of St. John’s Church. The non-
denominational cemetery is administrated by a Board of Trustees from St. John’s Church and includes a chapel and crematorium.
St. John’s Dixie Cemetery holds the burials of many of the early settlers of the area, such as Goldthorpe, Kennedy, Pallett, Price, Walterhouse and Willcox.
