History:
Here on a picturesque hill, above the din of highway traffic, lies the Cosmopolitan Cemetery that was purchased from George Crozier and his wife Catherine Sarah Crozier on 15 September, 1865 for $134.00, situated in the 1st Range NDS, Lot 3 S-1/2, in the Old Racey Tract.
The trustees in 1865 were: George Falconer, Emerson Taylor, Charles Anderson, Ira Stafford, Henry McGill, George Hannah, and James Conover.
The cemetery adjoins St. Peter’s Anglican Cemetery, and there remains a row of concrete posts, about 18” high, that once chained off the division between St. Peter’s Cemetery and the Cosmopolitan Cemetery.
In 1981, Mr. Thompson Adamson, whose ancestors were among the first settlers of Erindale, began to restore the old gravestones, which would have crumbled away if it were not for his dedication and hard work in preserving the heritage of our pioneer settlers.
The cemetery is still in use. The early burial register to 1930 has never been found. Through the courtesy of Mr. John Sproule, a descendant of early settlers of the area, and caretaker since 1929, the burial register has been copied to the present time and is included in this cemetery recording.
The early era of Wesleyan Methodists of Springfield and area is found in the New Credit Mission Register 1826-1887, Indian Village.
The “Erindale” Methodist Church in the village was dedicated in 1877, the land said to have been given by Emerson Taylor, hotel proprietor, who was born in Tonawanda, Bradford County, P. A.
On 1 August 1900, Springfield-on-the-Credit was changed to Erindale, by the Post Office Department at Ottawa.
