History:
Alloa, which bears the name of a small town near Stirling in Scotland, was situated on the 17th Sideroad near the present Home United Church. Apparently, at one time there was a sawmill, post office in a store, butcher shop, slaughterhouse, blacksmith, and carriage shop, two hotels and several dwellings.
In 1828, William Clarridge gave land on Lot 15, Concession 4 for a schoolhouse, church and burying ground. The rent was one barley-corn and the first trustees were William Fox, George Ferguson and Jacob Shook.
In the beginning the school was used as a place of worship and then a small log church was built.
A brick church was built in 1862 on the corner opposite the cemetery, on Lot 16 Concession 3 on the farm of William Drinkwater. The brick for the building was made on the Drinkwater farm and the bricklayer was Levi Fuller. At that time Alloa was a Methodist Episcopal Church and was on the Brampton Circuit along with Brampton, Salmonville, Switzers, Springbrook, Proctors, Pages, and Churchville.
In 1884, it became a part of the Methodist Church of Canada and then a part of the United Church in 1925.
The cornerstone for the present church was laid October 27, 1926 on land donated by Mr. T. O. Dolson.
Information for this history from Bill Taylor of Snelgrove and the Tweedsmuir History of the Brampton West Women’s Institute. The Tweedsmuir History is at the Region of Peel Archives and it contains a lovely picture of the old brick church.
There is a cairn located in the cemetery which reads as follows: Alloa Cemetery, donated 1828 by W. & E. Clarridge for a school and burial place for the neighbours. Restored 1970 by descendants of pioneer families. SS No. 6 AD. 1870.
