History:
The History of Eden Mills by Hazel Mack, 1954, gives an extensive history of the Chapel, which includes the following information.
In 1844, a meeting of the inhabitants of upper Nassagaweya was held to consider erecting a house of publick (sic) worship, with John Youart, Chairman, Angus Stuart, Secretary. Trustees chosen were Wm. Martin Jr., Edward Thomas Jr., Richard Watson, Joshua Long and Angus Stuart. 3/8 acre on Lot 28 Concession 2 was set apart for a Chapel 25 feet square, and the burying ground. Deed for the land was to be given by Wm. Martin Sr. to the Trustees, for the use of the Canadian Wesleyan Methodist New Connexion Church. The Chapel was used as a place of worship by 6 October 1845.
Early church supporters were – Wm. Martin Sr., Wm. Howe, Angus Stuart, Wm. John Thomas, Charles Stewart (Stuart?), Edward Thomas, Thos. Locker, Thos. Taylor, Geo. Salvler, Richard Watson, Joseph Bowles, Robt. Fletcher, John Atkinson, Owen Hopkins, Quint A. Atkinson, Hiram Gordon, Robt. Fiske, Lollezy Fiske, John Ryan, Geo. Castel, James Meadows.
The Chapel stood on the left side of the property, facing the road, and was constructed of great cedar logs, smoothed on the interior (adze marks showing plainly), but left rough on the outside. It was closed in 1862 because the minister of the circuit had another appointment for Sabbath afternoon when they insisted on having their service. The Chapel, long neglected, was moved to the nearby Thomas farm over 50 years ago (as of 1954).
The 1857 list of members was – Quinton Atkinson, leader, Wm. Martin, elder, Deborah Martin, Angus Stuart, John Atkinson, Mary Atkinson, Abednego Bardwell, Isobella Bardwell, Meshack Bardwell (removed), Lucy Bardwell, John Mayhew (dead), Robt. Fisk, Elizabeth Fisk, Mrs. Walt, John Larter (removed), Samuel Ives (removed), Wm. Laing Sr., Euphemia Laing.
The earliest burial inscription is 4 January 1846, the latest is George Martin 1898 (Family Bible shows 2 February 1899). His wife, Frances James, was daughter of Wm. James and Thamar Peart, who are buried in St. Luke’s Churchyard, Burlington.
Wm. Martin, who had been a local preacher in England, emigrated in 1831-2, and frequently conducted service in private homes at first.
Members of the Youart and other families are buried in Ebeneezer Churchyard, Lot 22, Concession 3.
Joshua Long moved to Burlington and is buried in East Plains Churchyard.
Apparently, no burial records for Cove have survived.
