Cairn: “In memory of the pioneers of Castlederg to mark the sight of the Methodist Church erected in 1894. Changed to United in 1925. Last service held Dec 2 1965”.
The strange grave of John Briggs is accounted for by the fact that he owned the 100 acre farm on Lot 15 Concession 8 Albion on which Castlederg General Store, Post Office and Methodist Church were situated.
Perkins Bull reports that sometime in the 1800s Briggs donated the land for a church and a graveyard at Castlederg and stipulated that he alone should be buried there. He was first buried so close to the church that parishioners were compelled to walk over his grave on leaving the church. His body was therefore moved to the southern edge of the churchyard and about 15 yards from the rear corner of the church and a gray granite monument, with an iron railing and marble corner posts, was erected there.
