History:
In May 1819, Andrew Cheyne, Christopher Cheyne and Joseph Graham were amongst twenty-six Irish families who departed the United States because of religious persecution following the War of 1812. The group was destined for Little York (Toronto) where the government of Upper Canada had reserved the northern part of Toronto Township for Irish Protestants.
The Cheyne and Graham families were granted deeds to the lands surrounding this cemetery. In 1856 both families donated adjacent corners of their land for the establishment of a Wesleyan Methodist Church. The church was known locally as the Cheyne Chapel and was likely located adjacent to the cemetery site. The surviving markers record thirty-seven burials. Typical of pioneer cemeteries there are likely a number of unmarked graves within the cemetery boundaries.
A City of Brampton heritage cemetery. The history of the burial ground is very obscure. The first recorded burial was 1844, the last in 1906. A Wesleyan Methodist Church was once near this property. A research report is at the Region of Peel Archives. This cairn was erected in 1983.
