History:
As the first cemetery in the north-west corner of the Town of Milton, on what is now Bronte Street, was filling up, it was decided to look for land for a new cemetery. A group of citizens was formed comprising of Messrs Campbell, Smith, Brothers, Robertson, Bennett, McGibbon, Cartiner and Watson. On December 1 1881, this group purchased a piece of land, comprised of 8 acres, being part of Lot 13, Concession 2, Trafalgar Township, New Survey from Joseph Martin and wife in the south east part of the Town of Milton.
On December 1 1897, the above gentleman turned over the cemetery to the newly formed Milton Cemetery Company, which to this day administers its care.
On March 15 1951 the cemetery was enlarged. Active Subdivisions Ltd sold to the Milton Cemetery Company 10.3 acres of land, being part of Lot 12, Concession 2, Trafalgar Township, New Survey.
Mrs Ellen E Freeman, aged 31 years, was the first person buried in the new cemetery on November 17 1881 in Lot 1, Block 1. Her name can be found in entry 471 in the cemetery transcription. It should be noted that she was buried 14 days before the closing date of the land purchase in 1881.
Evergreen Cemetery is open for burials.
