History:
In her history of St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Cemetery, Trudy Mann states that the “first resident priests of Peel County resided at St Patrick’s Church at Wildfield in Toronto Gore Township serving the whole county from 1829-1856. The parish was divided at this time and the Fifth Line Church (known by various names over the years) at Elmbank became responsible for the southern portion of Peel County and formed the beginning of what is known as St Patrick’s parish.”

In 1864 ten acres at Dixie Road and Dundas Street were purchased by Father Flannery, and on October 17, 1872, Archbishop Lynch blessed and officially opened St. Patrick’s Church on this location. After St. Patrick’s was built, Catholics from Dixie were buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Credit, until 1913, when the land on which Mount Peace Cemetery is located was purchased by the parish and registered in the name of the Episcopal Corporation of the Archdiocese of Toronto, intended as a general burial ground for Catholics. By the terms of the constitution of October 22, 1944, the Cemetery Board consisted of seven members including the parish priest of Dixie or his delegate and six other elected members.

In 1972 a new St. Patrick’s Church was opened on Flagstaff Drive and the old St. Patrick’s Church at Dixie and Dundas was demolished. Mount Peace Cemetery was taken over in 1970 by Assumption Cemetery, which is now responsible for its maintenance and administration. Surnames of some of the families which have been buried in Mount Peace include Harrison, Lamphier, McCartney, McGillion, Murphy, O’Brien and Walsh.
