History:
Ralph and Elizabeth Plummer came from Wexford County Ireland in the 1830’s. Elizabeth purchased two hundred acres comprising Lot 8 Concession 6 in Albion Township on December 12, 1836, and then sold the east half (100 acres) to William Devlin et al on Dec. 17, 1836.

Elizabeth upon her death, Sept. 27, 1854, bequeathed the west ½ (100 acres) to her son William Plummer in her will. The will contained a memorial stating that the property, upon William’s death, be given to his son William Case Plummer and “reserving to her son-in-law William Caldwell and her daughter Eliza Caldwell, their children and posterity forever, the use of the burial ground on the said lot”. The cemetery was located on a hill covered by a grove of lilacs.

The site was designated as an abandoned cemetery on Nov. 11, 1985 by Bylaw 85-173 which amended Bylaw 74-68. A cairn has been erected surrounded by a small park, 65 feet by 65 feet, the area of the original cemetery, which is now in the middle of a housing subdivision.

Ralph and Elizabeth’s son Thomas Ralph Plummer married, in Albion Township, Jane Stewart who was a great-great aunt of Ronald Stewart. He is the husband of Sandy Fice who has been researching her husband’s family and as the result provided some of this history.

William Case Plummer sold the west ½ (100 acres) to William Williamson on Jan. 29, 1864. William Williamson sold 5 acres of the lot to John Corliss on Nov. 25, 1875.

He sold the balance of the lot (95 acres) to John Clarke on Nov. 19, 1878 who in turn sold it to James Clarke. On June 24, 1884 James Clarke sold the land back to John Clarke. The next owner was John Richard Barron who purchased it on Oct. 13, 1888 and then mortgaged the property for $3500 from John Clarke. This mortgage was discharged and renewed from George Gooderham on April 27, 1889.

John Richard Barron sold the 95 acres to Robert Abbs on Feb. 17, 1890. The mortgage must have defaulted because the property was sold by John Clarke to Robert Pettigrew on Dec. 20, 1890. Robert Pettigrew mortgaged the property for $3860: $3360 from George Gooderham and $500 from Catherine Pettigrew. A release was granted to George Gooderham by Robert Pettigrew (an unmarried man) and Catherine Pettigrew (a widow) on Feb. 18, 1897.

Jabez Wakely Jr. purchased the property on Jan. 29, 1898 from George Gooderham et ux. On March 18, 1899 an agreement was made by Jabez Wakely (widower) and Jabez Wakely (the younger) to allow Louis Angus Wakely and Francis Joseph Wakely joint use of the property. Upon Jabez Wakely’s death on Aug. 16, 1899, by release and the terms and conditions of his will, the property passed to Louis Angus, Jabez and Francis Joseph Wakely. Portions of the property were sold off in the succeeding years. The balance of the property was owned in 1980 by Dorothy and Godfrey Wakely, a descendant of Jabez.
