History:
In 1956, a number of Anglican families in Lakeview decided to acquire land to start their own church.

Two acres on Haig Boulevard were purchased and a school portable was set on it that would suffice for services until funds could be attained to construct a decent sized building. They called it St. Luke’s Anglican Church and held their first service on February 17, 1957 with the Reverend Douglas Candy as the first rector. He was ordained in 1940. The children attended Sunday School in the former Ogden Avenue Public School. The school portable was used for services until a more permanent structure could be built.

By 1959, sufficient funds had been accumulated to purchase five acres at 1513 Dixie Road (Lot 5 Concession 2, SDS), the present location. The land was purchased on October 13th, 1959 from Mary McAuliffe’s estate. There was a two-story, 14-room house on the property that had been built by the McAuliffe family in 1938 when they purchased it from Margaret O’Brien. It was restored at a cost of $5,000 to be used as the Rectory, church offices, and Sunday School facility. It was referred to as the Parish House.

The portable was moved to the new location and used for services until the new church could be built. The first service at the new location was held in the portable on December 6, 1959. The first sod for the present church was turned Sunday, October 23, 1960. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on Saturday, December 10, 1960 by the Right Reverend G. B. Snell, Coadjutor Bishop of Toronto. The contract to build the new church cost $76,000. The new church was ready for services on Sunday, May 17, 1961. The church was dedicated by the Anglican Bishop of Toronto, the Right Reverend F. Wilkinson. Over 300 parishioners attended the service conducted by the Bishop of Ottawa, the Right Reverend E. Reed.

On October 22, 1964, the new rectory at 1506 Larchview Trail was occupied.

In September 1976, the new Allen organ was dedicated. The organ fund target was reached by October 1978.

St. Luke’s Garden of Remembrance opened in 1971. There are 82 memorials.
