History:
One half acre was given by John Inglehart in 1840. The lot was cleared, logs were hauled to the local saw mill and made into lumber. From this a frame church was erected. The church was formally opened by the Rev Thomas Green of Wellington Square. The Rev C W Warr of St Jude’s in Oakville officiated at the ceremony in 1846.
A melodeon was hauled later by ox team the three miles to the church every Sunday. It was played by Wm Peacock. He had Earlier led the singing with a tuning fork (a great-grand- daughter, Miss Jessie Dearing later had the melodeon).
There was no resident minister until 1874 when the Rev E A Taylor became the first. In 1885, one half acre across from the church was given by Thomas Dearing and a rectory was built by subscription. The Rev J H Fletcher was the first minister to occupy the rectory. The church was closed from 1900 to 1910.
Pews were rented at one time for £1 for a whole pew and 10 shillings for one-half pew.
Bishop Strachan said “Palermo is the principal station next to the mission at Oakville”. (from a letter book 1843-1866, October 9 1845).
Letter from Ernest Hawkins to Bishop Strachan in Toronto, 1845:
“The Queen Dowager sent a contribution of £20 to Mr Warr after he had sent her a memorial.
The Queen Dowager would not permit her name to be mentioned.”
Jim Diell.
