History:
The first church services of the area of St Mary’s were held in the home of John Corkett Tullamore. In 1832, Tullamore was a Mission and the first church, of frame construction, was built in 1842. Land was donated by William Neely. Early pioneer founders were: L. M. Chaffee, William Morrison, Matthew Morrison, J. Calcutt, John Lundy, Peter Slater, Nicholas Berry, John Little, Thomas Munns, Thomas Burrell, and William Little.
The church was originally named for “Mary” or Marion Townrow, wife of James Robinson of this township and daughter-in-law of Dr. John Robinson, a highly influential man in the community.
The wooden building had a tall spire and inside it had high backed pews, a large gallery, and well-designed chancel. I. M. Chafee led the choir of the church, accompanying them on his melodeon. As the village grew and more seating was needed, a larger brick church was built in (1861?) located to the rear of the cemetery. The church burned down in 1916 and was rebuilt. A newspaper article of 1937 stated that in June of that year, St Mary’s had celebrated its 100th birthday. The rectory and its buildings were torn down in 1925.
The cemetery has been in use since 1833. In 1848 Rev Alex Burnside Chafee’s paternal grandmother was buried here. In 1918 a meeting of the board wanted to get a fund established for a caretaker. In 1935, trustees of the church were Wardens: R. Turner, S. Yates; Lay Dele- gates: R. Turner, Henry Little; Vestry Council: R. Turner, S. Yates, H. Morrison, J. Archdekin, Stanley Archdekin, Henry Little, W. Grey; Sidesmen: William Craig, Elmore Archdekin, Harold Archdekin and Vestry Clerk: John Yates.
Today, only the cemetery remains with many of the monuments almost illegible, some sinking or broken, while others are in very good condition. The cemetery itself seems to be fairly well looked after. One monument looked as if it may have been removed from a stone foundation, and Mrs. Stuart Carberry of Tullamore informed me that it could be the Archdekin monument of Jim Archdekin and Isabell McClure, which was moved to Brampton ca 1930s along with their remains.
The cemetery was recorded by Perkins Bull in the 1930’s, in the 1970’s by Mrs. Stuart Carberry, in the 1970’s by Bill Britnell and by Trudy Mann in the fall of 1981. All records were compared and hopefully a fairly accurate recording has now been made. In the attached recording there is information in brackets that Mrs. Carberry had in her listing for which I could not find a record.
The church is in the Bolton circuit and Christ Church in Bolton has the baptismal registers 1862- 1887, 1917-1949; marriage registers 1917-67; death registers 1862-1886, 1917-1949; confirmation records 1880, and anniversary photographs; baptismal registers for the Mission of Chinguacousy, Gore of Toronto and parts adjacent 1843-1857.
As well as burials the confirmations are also there. This contains information on members of St. Mary’s. St John’s Church in Castlemore also serves the area and may have additional information. Also the Anglican Church Archives Toronto could also be contacted.
