History:
The building of St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Hornby was begun in 1836 on an acre of land donated by John Cowin on the northeast corner of his farm. The church was built at an angle to the property line so the congregation, in Anglican tradition, faced east when they worshipped at the altar. This explains the plot pattern of the original cemetery section that was laid out in 1847.
The burial plots originally cost one pound five shillings each, but in 1855 the price was increased to two pounds. In 1860 the fee was changed to ten dollars with the money being used for upkeep of the grounds and towards a fund for the building of a rectory.
A memorial tablet on the front wall of the church reads “In memory of John Cowin – died August 13 1877 – aged 73 years – a native of Tipperary Ireland – erected by the congregation”.
In 1913 forty feet of lane frontage that ran the length of the church was purchased in order to enlarge the cemetery, at a cost of three dollars per foot. Mr G E Saunders was appointed in 1917 to draw a plan of this new section of the graveyard, and the tall evergreens that now line the new section were planted at that time. The cemetery is open for burials.
In 1966 a replica of an old English Lynch-gate was erected in the churchyard leading to the newest section of the cemetery This was a memorial to the late Foster Brain who served 26 years on the cemetery board
