History:
One hundred yards outside the cemetery, there is a large field that once had been a family burying ground –
John Erwin 1852, aged 65 years
Ann Erwin 1862, aged 84 years
William Palmlaw 1858, aged 35 years
“Whether or not there is a connection between the Palmlaws and the Erwins is not known, but apparently back in 1850-60, they were buried in the same lot, and these were all the burials made in that particular place.”
The property was originally deeded to the church by John Erwin, September 12, 1845.

St. John’s Anglican Church stands on land donated by John Erwin in 1844. The cemetery adjoining was originally called Erwin’s Cemetery. The original church was more centrally situated on the lot, close to the two very tall pine trees.
George Tavender, author of “From This Year Hence”, told the story that Erwin had a falling-out with the Churchwarden of the church, and when he died, he was buried outside the churchyard. The Churchwardens later regretted their decision, and John Erwin, his wife, and hired men were dug up and reburied inside the churchyard.
