Wakely Family Farm Cemetery

Location:
Station Road and King Street (Bolton), Caledon, Peel Region, Ontario, Canada.
Concession 6, lot 8 W½, Albion Township.

History:
Jabez Wakely Jr. purchased the west ½ (95 acres) of Lot 8 Concession 6 in Albion Township on Jan. 29, 1898 from George Gooderham et ux. On March 18, 1899 an agreement was made by Jabez Wakely (widower) and Jabez Wakely (the younger) to allow Louis Angus Wakely, Jabez, Francis and Joseph Wakely joint use of the property.

Upon Jabez Wakely’s death on Aug. 16, 1899, by release and the terms and conditions of his will, the property passed to Louis Angus, Jabez Francis and Joseph Wakely. Portions of the property were sold off in the succeeding years. The balance of the property was owned in 1980 by Dorothy and Godfrey Wakely, a descendant of Jabez.

Louis Wakely stated in 1990 that three stillborn children of Jabez Wakely had been buried behind the red brick house located on the farm. An extensive search was made by the Town of Caledon authorities covering a wide area behind the house, but no remains were found. The house has been torn down and the area is now part of a housing subdivision.

The children are included on the memorial in Laurel Hill Cemetery Bolton located in number 532 with their parents Jabez Wakely and Catherine A. Perdue.

According to information received from Sally Drummond, Senior Planner, Heritage, Town of Caledon, an archaeological assessment was carried out in the area in 2004 but no traces were found of any burials. However, the Town of Caledon created the Wakely Memorial Parkette, adjacent to the Wakely Farm House (49 Wakely Blvd), as a memorial to the family and to the children.
