History:
Woodhill’s Corners: “Two churches in Woodhill were supported by the local families. Salem Wesleyan Methodist Church on the Robert Woodill estate with cemetery adjoining on Lot 5, had a short life and later became a grange hall.
The little cemetery adjacent to the Salem Church contains the remains of many of the early pioneers; such as, John Woodill, who died in 1834; Captain Abraham Odlum, 1838, and his wife Jane; George Ward died in 1847 and Joseph Figg. In 1966, this cemetery was restored.
In 1849, Robert Woodill sold part of the south-west quarter to George Roper, trustee, for the Primitive Methodist Connexion, for two pounds. In 1853, a second portion was sold to the church for two pounds, six shillings.”
Information from the book “From This Year Hence” written by Geo. S. Tavender
“The name Woodill has always been confused with WOODHILL, even though the family say that the name never was Woodhill, but yet when the Plaque was placed in the Cemetery in 1967, it says “Erected in memory of Woodhill Pioneers 1967”.
It is a “closed” cemetery. The grounds are well looked after. It was restored in 1967 as a family centennial project. Thirty of the stones have been place in a cement “Cairn”. There are also three large free-standing monuments.
